Depending on the application
You and your loved one may be eligible for more freedom of movement, the ability to appeal a decision, and work permit alternatives, depending on the application you use to sponsor them.
Although Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to sponsor, the sponsorship procedure might be challenging.
After determining your eligibility as a Sponsor Spouse in Canada and that of your loved one, you should proceed with your application by completing the following steps:
- Choose whether or not to use a representative; if you would like, hire one.
- Choose the sponsorship category under which to submit an application.
- Compile the necessary paperwork.
- Send in an application online.
Assess if using a representative is necessary.
You have the option of using a representative or managing your application yourself. There are two types of representatives: paid and unpaid.
Authorisation is required for paid representatives. We prohibit any unapproved individual from acting as a representative in exchange for payment.
Whether your representative receives compensation or not, it’s your responsibility to disclose their use.
For a set charge, a qualified representative will normally walk you through the full application procedure from beginning to end.
Choose the sponsorship category to apply for.
You might be qualified for more than one class, or you might only be eligible for the Family class, depending on your living arrangement and relationship:

Preventing problems with your application
Key points to remember when preparing your application: • You are required to fill out the application forms honestly. Giving false or misleading information on your immigration application is a criminal offence. Misrepresentation is a type of fraud that may result from doing this.
To make sure you have completed all required fields, use the “validate” option at the conclusion of the forms that include them. • Your application for permanent residency (PR) must include the declaration of every family member. Family members must be screened for the PR application, even if they aren’t going to Canada with you.
o The IRCC cannot inspect or list family members not included in your permanent residence application for later sponsorship.
· Your family members might have to provide police certificates and have a medical examination by a panel physician recognised by the IRCC, depending on your circumstances.
o Failure to comply with the aforementioned requirements may result in the revocation of your permanent residence status.
- To prevent application delays, double-check all information and document checklists for completeness. Applications that are not complete will be rejected and removed from the processing queue.
