Why did split testing suddenly become one of the hottest internet marketing trends today? That is because the ultimate goal of split testing is to increase conversions. Conversions is defined as the percentage of people who perform a specific desired outcome on your web campaign, such as sign up to your newsletter, buy a product or read your email.
Split testing is performed because we don’t know if we have maximized the full potential of our web campaign until we have tested it. Besides that, the cost of advertising online has increased (i.e PPC) and the emergence of split testing tools such as Google Website Optimizer and GetResponse has made split testing a whole lot easier.
The easiest and cheapest way to do split testing, ask your customers. Example, ask your customers 5 seconds after they enter your site to find out what they have seen. Certain customers buy products and certain customers don’t. Ask them to find out why they didn’t buy using surveys like SurveyMonkey. Another example of a split test which can be used is in Google AdWords. You can run two separate ads targeting similar keywords to see which converts better. In other words, drop the ad which doesn’t convert as well.
So what stuff should we be split testing? Good you asked. Headlines are great for testing, whether on your sales page, squeeze page or blog because if they don’t like the headline they won’t read further. Tag lines under your logo make a difference as well. Test your prices, high end, low end, mid range, one time offers and other back ends to see which gives you more profit overall. Tweak your sales page by adding testimonials, videos instead of pictures, money back guarantees, anything you can think of. Change font sizes, colors, pictures and layout. Add credibility logos to your sales page and see whether it increases conversions (tip: most of the time it does).Do not worry about losing money initially as once you find what works the best, you will make much more in the long term.
Lastly, to give you a good idea of what works, mimic trends of other successful internet marketers, especially those who run split tests (most successful ones do). That will save you a lot of time and energy figuring out what works best.
