Connecting your laptop to a TV or monitor allows you to play games, watch movies, listen to music, surf online, and more on a much larger display than your laptop. The good news? What Type of Cable Do I Need?

If you’re looking to connect your laptop to an LCD monitor, you’ll need a video cable. The different kinds of video cables are VGA, DVI and HDMI—it all depends on what kind of computer and monitor you have.

USB-C Cables and Chargers

If you want to connect your laptop and monitor with a USB-C cable, which some new laptops and monitors support, you can purchase adapters from Amazon or Monoprice. You can also purchase a USB-C splitter that allows two devices to plug into one port on your laptop.

Can’t See the Display? (Windows)

You can easily adjust your Windows display settings so that you can fit more on your screen at once—great for when you’re working with multiple documents or have a monitor with a large resolution. Here’s how: Open Control Panel by right-clicking on Start and choosing Control Panel. Click Appearance and Personalization, then click Adjust Screen Resolution under Display. The window will show all displays currently connected to your computer; choose one from here and click Apply followed by OK.

No Audio? (Windows)

If you’re on a Windows computer, use Windows 7, then press Ctrl + P. On Vista and XP, go to Control Panel and double-click on Sound. Next, click on Recording tab in Volume Mixer and select your speakers from Playback device list. Right-click speaker icon in Volume Mixer and choose Properties from context menu.
